Sexing Your Guinea Pig

A question I frequently get asked is 'Is my guinepigs male or female?'. Hopefully this will help you to determine the gender of your guinea pig easily.

Male/Boar

The most obvious difference is that a boar has testicles, however when a boar is young they can be hard to detect which is why a lot of people find it tricky.

If you apply pressure downwards above the penis it should pop out as pictured below, if nothing becomes visable then you know it is a female.

Female/Sow

A sow should have a 'Y' shaped opening as pictured below.

Young guinea pigs can be hard to sex, I personally would wait for them to mature slightly before you try and sex them, 2 weeks is a good age, though boars and sows will need to be separated at 3 weeks. If you are unsure about the gender of your guinea pig and this guide still has not helped you then please ask your vet for some help to prevent any unwanted pregnancys.
